In my personal essay, I discuss how I became a magician by getting a magic kit for my 6th birthday. In the essay, I briefly describe two tricks that I learned from that kit: the ball and vase; and the x-ray cube. I believe that those were the first two tricks I ever learned!
So now, almost 12 years later and having learned countless more “tricks”, I thought it would be fun to look back on my beginnings in magic. The video above (which I filmed) is a performance of each of the tricks. I probably haven’t performed either of them in 10 years, so it was a lot of fun to search for the props in my house (as I explain in the video, I actually lost part of the x-ray cube box) and perform these simple, little tricks.
What I find to be cool is that even though these two tricks come in almost every beginner magic kit, to the laymen (an “outsider” of magic), they are actually pretty impressive. I was amazed the first time I saw these tricks (I believe my dad performed them for me before I learned them) and maybe I can spread that amazement with the few people who visit this website.
