Who are you and where are you from?
My name is Ari Isenberg. I am 17 and I live in Atlanta, Georgia.
Who is in your family?
I have a mom, Leslie Isenberg, and a dad, Doug Isenberg. I also have two younger brothers (they are twins – 12 years old) named Jake and Jared.
What do you want to do in college?
That’s complicated. I always explain that I want to continue pursuing magic, acting, and photography/filmmaking. The cool thing is that all three of those “subjects” totally relate to and influence each other. So, as long as I can pursue one of the three, I’ll be involved, somehow, with the other two. In short, I am looking to pursue either acting and/or filmmaking and hopefully somewhere in New York (if not there, somewhere else in the Northeast).
Can you elaborate on how your three passions influence each other?
Sure. One of the easiest ways to explain it is through a famous quote said by French magician Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin: “A magician is an actor playing the part of a magician.” The skills I have learned as an actor help me in my performance as a magician. And magic techniques and illusions I have learned help me consult and create practical effects for theatre (e.g. a moving amputated hand for “Peter and the Starcatcher”). Photography and filmmaking help acting (photographing shows, filming show trailers, making audition self-tapes, etc.) and magic (social media, website material, practice for shows or routines, etc.).
When did you get started in magic?
I got a Marvin’s Magic kit for my 6th birthday, and I’ve been doing magic since then. My dad also did magic when he was a kid!
What deck of cards do you use?
Although most laypeople (aka non-magicians) use Bicycle cards to play card games, and a lot of magicians use fancily designed cards, I just use “Phoenix” playing cards. They were made for magicians, but there is nothing tricky about them. They don’t look too different from standard Bicycle cards, they are great quality, and they last a long time.
What’s your favorite musical?
I believe it is impossible for me to choose one. So, just to name a few that I am loving right now: Be More Chill, Dear Evan Hansen, Heathers, the music from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and Next to Normal.
What music are you listening to right now?
Besides musicals, I have found that movie soundtracks are actually great to listen to while I’m trying to do homework or need to concentrate on anything. Currently, I am listening to Ex Machina, First Man, Inception, and Interstellar. I am also loving listening to all of Billie Eilish’s work. She has a fresh sound (with some amazing music videos), and I totally respect her as an artist.
What’s your favorite movie?
Although there are so many movies that I love, Inception is an easy choice. Besides it being directed by the genius mind of Christopher Nolan, Inception has an awesome plot, some crazy amazing visuals, an amazing cast, and a great soundtrack.
What’s your favorite food?
Popcorn. There are many delicious flavors that popcorn can be made into (kettle, caramel, and cheesy ones are great). But, my favorite is “Orville Redenbacher's Natural Simply Salted Popcorn”.
Apple or Android (or any of the other bad softwares/companies)?
Apple… obviously. I have been using Macs at school and iPods at home since I was a little kid. They are the best in hardware and software in every way and there is no debate.
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
People who use the restroom and then don’t wash their hands. It’s gross. Don’t do it. Wash your hands.
